Envy can be a good thing!!

Chers Amis du l'Ecole du Bon Gout,  Yes, envy can be a good thing, if it gets you to do a creative project of "bon gout".

In recent years the Chateau de Versailles has done an miraculous job of repopulating the gardens there with hundreds upon hundreds of topiary trees and shrubs in a fantastic array of bizarre and imaginative shapes.  It has been enough to make me "topiary green" with envy!!  So when I saw a new shipment of topiary trees in at Home Depot, of all places, ( What would Louis XIV think of that!!?!?), I couldn't help myself.

The attached photos show the final installation of these plants, certainly up graded several notches by presenting them in antique "vases d'Anduse".( Louis XIV used "vases d'Anduse" at Versailles too, so I know he would approve of that part!).  Also attached are some photos of topiary installations in France as well as photos of a rare assembled set of 6 "vases d'Anduse", for sale here at my shop in case these photos have gotten your envy level activated enough to do a topiary project of your very own.

At the web site www.oxfordplanters.co.uk/topiary_history_detail.asp-cached-similar  there is an excellent article on the interesting history of topiary, which has been for thousands of years, one of man's great venues of garden creativity and of coarse "bon gout".
